Reform

Tracking and tracing
Studying from the Indigestion and the Dissident Housework Series – the events is changing. It regenerates the stuff and the field, and changes the relationship and essence of object by dynamic events.

Pollutant
The fog not only leaves the moisture in the space but also releases the smoke to reform the object. For example, the Blur (Diller+Scofidio, 2002) releases the fog. It reforms the original space and blurs the boundary of building. In addition, the human body generates and disturb this particle in the environment. Body releases pollutants through breath, body heat and vibrating the particle on the body (e.g. dandruff). I am thinking the altering body probably can generate the smoke and form the body-landscape. Next step, using the 3D scanner records the smoke landscape which releases from body, and producing the object which generates the pollutant attaches on the altering body.

Archos Workshop: Plymouth + Bartlett + AHO

The sensors which are set in the building collect the environmental effective elements data of each area’s in the building (temperature, humid, wind direction …and so on). My group used every fragment of the database and insert into 3D max to form a form. It hoped to reflect the element to environment in moment in everyday which based on different position, large, forms or colour. For example, we selected everyday’s data of wind direction (Monday to Sunday) at the same time of everyday. Then we can get the form of everyday (7 forms a week) and insert in the 3D software to connect with everyone. We believe the transforms reflect the environmental data in architectural form in the cube (building) and this idea seems can relate to my project.
The final presented of workshop showed a data-sensor system to reflect in the architectural circulation system. For example, the humid sensor will start blow the bloom in the building hall then block the entrance when it is rain and humility is raised.(humid data reflect to the large of form). Therefore, the students have to change their circulation to enter the building or black the elevator then students have to jump on the cushion to down stair. It maybe little bit fancy. The purpose is that generating new form from environmental data to relate with the original space (environment).
In my project, I think the light bulbs are the similar technical sensor to record the data of form in the environment. The drawings in the crit tried to analyse every movement. Light traces like the tracks of transform in the space and it regenerate the forms of each movement. The similar system is a new field (building or corridor) which is a time-based altering to dialogues in present space.

Term2 crit + further testing situation works

In the crit, there are some questions about relation of the body and space (environment). Therefore, I did an experiment to test how the environmental (field) conditions affect the altering body. The action is to open the window and the field conditions are changed (I set up different situation in the space). The body was changing with different time by different condition and the speed is also different.

thoughts of project

The body, the movement
Users will mark the architecture with their actions during occupation, leaving traces that suggest how it should be inhabited. (Nat Chard, 2005) The traces also reflect how body relates to the environment and create a new space with body movement. It records body motion to define the relationship between body and environments and what field is the body in.

The Hertzian Space
The idea is inspired by the picture. The white trace of naked dancer leaves her motion traces to create a new spatial dialogue with the original field as the fluid states of space. (see the picture of blog posted on 18 Nov) “…Electornic objects are not only ‘smart’, they ‘dream’ – in the sense that they leak radiation into the space and objects surrounding them, including our bodies.[…] Hertzian Space is three-dimensional and spatial. It is an environment that needs to be fully understood if it is to be made habitable. […] We believe that there is room for a new category of objects that provide complex aesthetic and psychological experience within everyday life…” (Raby+Dunne, 2005) If the Hertzian Space is transformed to be visible by using scanner, it would help us to record the boundary of dynamic field of body.

The events and environment
Tschumi suggests that architecture can accelerate the events of everyday life through new forms of organisation. Using various modes of notation ranging from rough models to sophisticated computer-generated images, he reveals the complexities of the architectural process and the rich texture of events that define urban reality today. Therefore, the physical events also influence body motion. – adding events at the existing space e.g. desk, chair, sofa, table, open window, going to the storage which is under the stair, and so on. It tries to know the field of altering body relating to the spatial events.
The system
Environmental illnesses – it is divided into three parts. User (the person who release the electronic radiation and show the body motion which are scanned), reader (the people who reconfigure the trace of user to draw the space by the result of scanning), and observer It is the representation of body to space that figure motions are recorded by the observer and then pass the information for the reader. It’s a process of creating space by user’s body in current environments. The reader uses the records to draw the space of user. The relationship of this system is to present the system of architecture which… The purpose of scanning is to figure out the influence of altering body from the environment and then creates new space of body. And it also knows how environment reflect to the motion of body. Maybe user can change his movement to adopt the environment or represent the relationship to field.

Constructing a system notation of my spatial language (thoughts of these two weeks)
According to the ‘Hertzian space’, ‘as the environment becomes flooded with electromagnetic radiation, all our senses are swamped with energy and information. While the entire world becomes electrified we are being overloaded by a vast world of electronic images, lights, and sounds, as huge amounts of information travel around the world at the speed of light and interact with the millions of electrical processes in every living cell of our bodies.' The methodology is inspired from using the idea of photographic and ‘Hertzian space’ to record body field to environment and spatial issue. Therefore, light bulb is as the electromagnetic radiation used to leave the trace of altering body motion. The scanner is used by photographic to record the changing body and to scan the electromagnetic radiation from body. Like Breakspear Hospital, it scans the body of patient then figure out the environmental illness. It needs to use numbers of electronic instrument to record and transmit the information of body motion during the testing process of this system. It is like ‘Hertzian Space’ that constantly draws the new spatial landscape for habitable. Light is a medium to be scanned the field of boundary of body motion. The light trace of basic movement will construct the basic language (notion) to help user to read the space of motion. How the notations which were tested from movement are organised the melody of body motion. The invisible events (e.g. light/ hot/ rain) also influence the body motion. The body reaction is affected with the environment to alter and adapt it, and also trace the new field in the existing space.1. Adding events - the changing housing 2. The static body (one snapshot of movement) with the dynamic events – what environment is surrounding it.What does it reflect to architecture?Environmental scannerTwo parts. Firstly, the object is set as the moment of body movement. Scanning it would realise the status of surrounding environments. Second, the object is as the static status. When other events and environments are still passing and changing, it would figure out the relationship of body and field.
Setting sites and Scenarios (Idea of Nomad life)
The three sites, model/pony rider/patient, present their bodies in the environments (the temporary stage / wild field / hospital corridor respectively). The observer and the reader construct a new frame of fluid surface by editing the photographic and video. Furthermore, the instrument scans the information of altering body from the sites for the observer and leaves the new surface such as the Hertz space which produces the unseen skin of interface. The system focus on three tests – Breakspear Hostipal curing / Fashion Catwalk performing / Polo training
The scanning tool is made as body scanner for observer to record the movement of body. The nomad life is from last term and relate to body motion with human behaviour. It hope to use ‘nomad’ to connect three sites and discuss the architectural issue. At this moment, I think I have to think what the relationships are between the fields of those sites. (maybe they would have short change after I think clearly)

Time based drawing:
The body drawing set up different speed motion to test the tracing field as the people in different circumstance. Also, testing another prespective photographic to compare and combine the old photgrahpic could create a space of body.the additional drawing information is constructing. More testing results will be shown at tutorial.
Scanning:
As the events is changing, the scanning experiment is testing the variation of environement. Although the condition of the scanning system should have the pure background at beginning, I tried to change and add some 'events' around the static object during the scanning.

notated motion

The first one tried to analyze the scale of whole body and each joints, and hoped to know how is the basic 'field' of every part of body.
When body starts to alter and was recorded by light bulbs in the dark, tried to notate the different posture of body.(lifting leg and bending)

scenario with stranged posture

Learning from Joel-Peter Witkin's photograhpic. Models use irregular posture to dialogue with environment (scene).
The events (body to body/ environmental factors)could influence the reflection of motion.

Scanning

Experiment B – 3D scanner
The 3D scanner skill which is learning from the instructable website. It is still in the progressing. The results are not perfect. Actually, I do not want it to scan the real figure. Nevertheless, I hope it only record the profile of the moving motion and the result can combine with the experiment A. Furthermore, it only can scan the static staffs and trying to test out how to scan the dynamic motion figure.

Motion capture and drawing

Experiment A – making a motion capturethe
Idea of learning from the way of motion capture sets the light bulb on the every main active joints of body. The purpose is hoping to get rid of the body profile and only record the relation of jointed-point to read the relationship of altering body to environment when the light is dark. Furthermore, using the light bulb draws the motion of space on the present space. In the experiment, the most light bulbs are setting on the central part of body, and using different colour light bulbs to distinguish the left and right side hopes to make depth in the photographic and tries to record the three dimensional space which is drawn by recording motion.During this recording, it not records accurately because some light bulbs are not bright enough and some light bulbs are broken. Fortunately, remaining lights draw the trace of motion and the blink of some figure motions for the reader.

the below is two series of photographic record the body when it is jumpping and standing up from prostrating.

[ text ] The idea of 'altering body'

ALTERING THE BODY
In the past, Da Vinci created the ‘vitruvivs’ to present the perfect scale of human body and it influenced the architecture and the art. Body is usually used to be the basic scale and proportion for design. Therefore, the relationship between the body and space is always the main point in discussion of spatial design. For example, Le Modulo used the proportion of human body as the basic scale for design. Le Corbusier said, ’a man who upraises his arm presents the space which he occupied’. Those drawings and photographic of his designs and observations were used to discuss the relationship of body and space, and they mostly emphasised on the static state of the space and functions.
However, the most interesting factor of the body is its ever-changing states. Also, the altering body also has the continuous rhythm and dynamic motion. In 1980’s, Muybridge and Marey had a serious photographic to record the figure of human and animals. They inspired Thomas Edison and Dickson William to discover the technique of photographic and to develop dynamic photos and drawings, such as techniques of filming and drawings of Francis Bacon’s work. The way of recording dynamic photographic and the instrument of photographic were developed and devised. That is when the research of the dynamic body motions and the body proportions were stressed. Greg Lynn was inspired as well. In his book ‘Animation Form’, he referred to the methods of capturing and analysing the body motions. The alteration of figures was drawn into a new curve, and simulated by the latest media, finally transferred into the basis of design and changing form. Furthermore, body motion is always by the outside elements. For instance, ‘Event City’, which is directed by Bernard Tshumi, presented the chain reaction of every event. The chain reaction of body showed the essence of the body is to sense the space.
Designer used to concern about the relationship of the static body with and space. However, the body is changing and altering because it is influenced by the people and the elements of surrounding environment. The procedure of altering body reflects the type of space, even only to focus on one part of the changing body. For example, the research of term one presented an object from one part of body (knee and leg) to adapt three sites. This object reflects the altering body which is affected by the environment. Moreover, from the research of Muybridge, the dynamic body is in the fluid states with the changing time. However, the technology is upgrading. It can record the precise changes of body. Furthermore, the observer draws the space of body by the recorded of motion, like the scanning of the body. Also, body motion likes ‘the Hertz space’ to leave the form and traces as a new surface during the every motion.
In the pass, the photographic of body motion by Muybridge was shown the record of dynamic figures in two dimensions. The methods were meant to pursuit the technique for capturing the ever-changing body. My ambition is to use the skill of motion capturing and photographic to develop and draw the animation of a three dimensional space. The body would then be able to draw a new boundary and a surface of landscape in the present space.Aim of term two is to find out the prototype of tools and explore the ways of recording the altering body in order to develop the static of three dimensional spaces.
The idea came from the way of motion capture. Light bulbs were set on the every main active joints of the body. The purpose is to get rid of the body profile and only record the relations of jointed-point in order to read the relationship of altering body and the environment. Furthermore, the light bulbs were used to draw the motion in the present space. In the experiment, the brightest light bulbs were set on the central part of the body. Different coloured light bulbs were meant to distinguish the left and the right side in the purpose to show the depth in the photographic. One more factor, the ‘time’, was added to record the four dimensional space.
During this experiment, some points were not recorded accurately because some light bulbs are not bright enough and some light bulbs are broken. Fortunately, remaining lights drew the traces of motions and the blink of some figure motions for the reader.
The 3D scanner skill was learned from a website called Instructable. It is still in the progress of development. The results are not perfect. Actually, I do not want it to scan the real figure. I hope it only records the profile of the moving motion and the result can be combined with the experiment A. Furthermore, it only can scan the static objects. The challenge is how to scan the dynamic motion figure with the ‘time’ element.

Testing

idea of altering body
I am thinking how to alter body from user and link to like the puppetry and Diller's project - 'the Automarionette '. For the site one - Model on Catwalk, the user contors the line which is from the back of the perforated screen (wall) to alter body after scanning the motion. However, I am thinking the line could another way which is high tech to connect with computer and based on the result of laser sacnner.

idea of recording body_1
I try to use water color ink to attach on the finger and waving in the water. The ink leaves some trace of motion and as a kind of landspcae to record the moition. It's the short expertiment of recording the trace of body motion and field.

idea of recording body_2
Try to cast the point of light on the body and using photograph to record the body motion. When the body moives in the dark, the light as notation to show the body motion. (Simulating the way of motion capture)

Those experiments was just to test the effect and i am going to try to combine them and think their connection.

the idea of making a 3D laser scanner

I try to research how to make a laser scanner capturing body motion. I have the idea of using webcan as one of the tools to make it. The idea is inspired by the log-in system of friend's laptop using webcan to scan the face to recognise. After reviewing 'the instructable', I tried to find the websites to make a easier and a prototypical body scanner. I found David-Lasserscanner using the simple way to scan and tried to do it and think how to apply in my project.

The below vedio is from instructable website which is about laser scanning:

Motion Capture

A number of vedio games which I played especial sport game use motion capture to record the body movement. It uses 'the balls' attached on the actor's figure to be sensed then constructs the 3D modle in Maya.

'Skeleton Boy'

Thanks Camille showing this interesting video to us in studio:

Friendly Fires 'Skeleton Boy' by Clemens Habicht from Nexus Productions on Vimeo.
Edgy, monochromatic music video for Friendly Fires, directed by Clemens Habicht. The band were transformed into Skeleton Boys as a nod to the track’s title, with the aid of double-sided sticky tape, fans and trillions of bean bag balls.

The project use the effects of molecule to present the body and music. Amazing it showing the interesting body performance and record the body by the material.(kind of skill of sketching body motion)

Physical Computing

Physical computing explores new ways computers can interact with the physical world. Using non-traditional sensors instead of a standard keyboard and mouse, input such as light, pressure, sound, and body movement trigger programmed responses from a computer. This response can be a virtual or physical event - interacting back with the "real world."

I am thinking the reader has reaction with user. From the data of observation, the reader(drawinger/doctor) using the concpet of physical computing to alter user's body motion.

As the below vedio:

ALTERING THE BODY

BREAKSPEAR HOSPITAL - Curing Environmental illnesses
Cyber-System of Architecture

Three parts:
The User - with the device to record the relationship of the body motion to environment and alter the motion to reflect the environment by the feedback of Observer
The Observer - collect the data of the user's body motion as the information and feedback to user
The Reader (Choreographier) - reorganise and reconfigurate the field of user (the cartography and choreography of landscape)
The idea would be relate to Hertizian Space / Physical Computing / RFID system / ShotCode / Mobile booth and learning from Hmmer's project to tune into and listen to different radio frequencies by using bodies motion.

Therefore, I am thinking the body as my site and there are two interesting schemes.
SITE ONE - the fashion model on the catwalk with Doctor designer(fashion/stage/show/technology/Architect)
As the below video show the performance of Hussein Chalayan's work,
In the fashion show, the model display the fashion works on the catwalk and has kind of interfaces and interactions.
However, the designer as the reader controls and reconstruct the show and the works with model.

SITE TWO: Traner of Polo

The polo player as the user to play or learn how to play the game.

The trainer as the observer and reader gives the player and horse feedback to alter the motion and reconfigurate the game by using technology.

Frequency and Volume - Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

This project was shown at The Barbican artgallery
Frequency and Volume enables participants to tune into and listen to different radio frequencies by using their own bodies. A computerised tracking system detects participants' shadows, which are projected on a wall of the exhibition space. The shadows scan the radio waves with their presence and position, while their size controls the volume of the signal.Up to 48 frequencies can be tuned simultaneously and the resulting sound environment forms a composition controlled by people's movements. This piece visualizes the radioelectric spectrum and turns the human body into an antenna. All the receiver equipment used and antennae are exhibited in an adjacent room.

Back to my project, it likes kind of system which i am thinking with the interaction between the user, the observer and the reader (re-constructor of 'space'). It connects the body motion and the location of human with technology effects. Also, the sound environment like the system - the observer give the responses of motion with environment back to the user after collecting the data from the motion of user by using technology. And then, the user can adapt or adjust his motion to the field.

idea of Landscape with the effect of 'Shotcode'

Thinking about the interaction between the user, the observer and the reader.
The emerging Landscape, which is edited as a chartography by reader, reflects the body motion on user and reader.

Thoughts of casa per tutti
Social housing today faces new challenges: the fragmentation of societies, waves of migration and their impact on local cultures, an increase in mobility, the awareness of the limited nature of resources, the need for higher compatibility between building and nature, and the necessity to "invent" more flexible and ephemeral spaces that would better respond to the needs and cultures of their users.

umbrella house
kengo kuma used modified umbrellas, which have zippers along their outer edges are zipped together to create thismodular shelter. each umbrella has two extra 'flap's that hang from its centralsegments to allow for different compositions .the zippers are cut slightly longer than the umbrella's edges so that the excessmaterial can be tied together to seal joints.the inside of the structure leaves the umbrella mechanisms exposed.

Umbruffla
Anything by Vito Acconci is bound to get all my attention so i'll kick of the list of projects i most liked with Umbruffla. Conceived by Studio Acconci, this is a new umbrella you could wrap yourself up in. Fix one end to your waist, the other to one wrist, so that both hands are free. Wearing it, you could dodge a passer-by, turn it windward and even welcome a companion under it with you. Umbruffla is made from two way mirrored mylar. From outside the surface is mirrored, so while you can see through from inside, you would be camouflaged by the reflections of the city which shimmers on you as you walk.
The name of the object comes from English - 'ruffle'. When the object is closed, "the ruffles are gathered into a ruffle", but, when opened, "the ruffles unfold, fan out, spring out, into an umbruffla."
